Goshen police work to update mutual aid pacts

Morning Journal News

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP- The Goshen Police District updated its mutual aid agreement with the Sebring Police Department at the regular meeting of township trustees Monday night.

The trustees approved the update to the agreement which hadn't been current since 1999, according to Chief Steve McDaniel. The updated agreement is a standard mutual aid agreement in which both departments provide assistance to the other at no cost.

McDaniel said that he is currently attempting to work out new agreements with the Perry Township Police Department and the Columbiana County Sheriff's Office, both of which have expired agreements. He noted that officers still assist other departments in emergencies even without the current mutual aid agreements.

In other business, the trustees approved the promotion of police officer David Yohman from reserve to part-time effective Dec. 16 and approved the purchase of a 2013 Chevy Tahoe police cruiser from Stratton Chevrolet for $23,270 after trade-in.

The trustees also tabled discussion regarding roof repairs at the Administration Building to further investigate what should be done. Road Foreman Jim Stryffeler provided quotes from two companies for the project which currently includes repair of two sections of flat roof, patching over the gym and resealing the gym windows. Since neither company would be able to start the project soon, according to Stryffeler, the trustees opted to consider the matter a little more.

Also at the meeting, Recycling Coordinator Paul Manypenny reported that the township in 2012 generated 4,560 pounds of material at the scrap drive, 164 tires at the tire drive, 2,583 pounds at the electronic drive, over 6,000 pounds of overflow and $503.83 in aluminum cans.

The year end meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Dec. 28 and the reorganizational meeting for 9 a.m. Jan. 5, both at the Administration Building.
