New drilling applications slow down

December 9, 2012
Morning Journal News

LISBON - New gas drilling applications have again slowed to a crawl, with only two new well permits sought and/or approved in the past month or so.

The new permit applications in recent weeks were:

- Hartz well off Crestview Road in Fairfield Township.

- Tritten well off state Route 172 in Center Township.

Both applicants are Chesapeake Exploration.

This brings to 53 the number of natural gas wells permits issued for Columbiana County since July 2010. Less than half have been drilled, and only one is currently in production, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website.

The following are the permitted sites by township, but there can be more than one well per site:

Butler, 5; Center, 4; Elkrun, 7; Fairfield, 4; Franklin 3; Hanover, 9; Knox, 4; Madison, 2; Middleton, 5; Salem, 4; Unity, 2; Washington, 2; West, 2.
