Columbia Gas weighs in on township road repairs

December 6, 2012
Morning Journal News

CALCUTTA - Dave Rau, communication and community relations manager with Columbia Gas, says his company's goal is to maintain a good working relationship with all municipalities, and he believes one will continue with St. Clair Township.

"On every project we work hard to restore property, be it lawns, sidewalks or roadways," Rau said. "If there's an issue we want to get it resolved."

It was the trustees contention this week that Columbia Gas does not always do a quality job repairing roadways after gas main related projects. They mentioned a 2011 project on Coolidge Avenue as an example.

Rau explained Columbia Gas did return to the site on Coolidge and repaired material in the roadway that had settled.

"We were informed of the ruts in the roadway and we did come back to do additional pavement work," he said.

Rau emphasized a desire to continue to work with the township and to do quality repairs on the roads after such projects. "We want the roads to be in as good of condition as they were before a project."

The board's concern arose at Monday's meeting from an application for Columbia Gas to work within a township right of way. The proposed project would entail a 240-foot gas main extension to a new customer on Milton Avenue, requiring the gas main go underneath the roadway.

The application stated a directional boring method would be used in order to cause minimal disturbance to the roadway's surface. However, trustees and Road Supervisor Scott Barrett agreed they were dissatisfied with repairs made to township roadways following similar Columbia Gas projects.

The board explained that material used to fill in after the boring process, settles over time causing a dip in the roadway. Due to these concerns and a desire to learn more about the project, trustees chose to withhold a vote on the application.
