Sebring, OH - Howard Wilson Wilhelm, 96, formerly of the New Waterford and East Palestine area died at 3:35 pm Monday, December 3, 2012 at Crandall Medical Center.
Mr. Wilhelm was born August 20, 1916 in East Palestine, a son of John Ross and Edith Wilson Wilhelm and had lived in this area most of his life.
Howard graduated from East Palestine High School in 1934, Ohio Wesleyan University in 1938 and Julliard School of Music, New York City in 1942. He and his wife, Ellen met at Julliard.
He served in the US Marine Corp during World War II as a First Lieutenant. He was a pilot in the Pacific and China where he was awarded various medals including the Air Medal awarded by the President of the United States for his action in the Pacific.
Howard was a salesman for his family's lumber company, East Palestine Lumber Company. He later became part owner of the company and retired in 1986.
He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he served as Trustee, Chairman of the finance committee, lay leader and choir director.
Besides spending time with his family, Howard also loved golf, traveling to Europe and singing engagements to include performances at the Youngstown Play House.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, the former Ellen Huffmaster, whom he married July 8, 1943; two daughters, Geraldine (David) Guy of East Palestine and Katherine Doyle of Conneaut; eight grandchildren, Erich (Sara) Guy, Kari (Matt) Lohrman, B.J. Doyle, K.D. Doyle, Molly Doyle, Dawn Waller, Gwyn Waller and Fay Waller; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Virginia Waller, two sisters, Helen Meanor and Esther Morris and a brother, John Wilhelm.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2012 at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home, East Palestine with Pastor Mark McTrustry officiating. Interment will be in Glenview Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:30 am -1:00 pm Friday at the funeral home.
