Don’t forget local merchants

Even though we haven't had our turkey yet, shoppers and merchants are already talking about this year's Black Friday specials.

For retail merchants, the day after Thanksgiving - Black Friday - and the subsequent weekend can either make or break their holiday shopping season. The November-December gift-buying frenzy can account for half of merchants' total annual sales. Some large retail stores are getting an even earlier jump on the weekend shopping by opening late on Thanksgiving evening to kick off sales.

While it's exciting to get up in the wee hours of the morning to stand in line outside one of the big-box retail stores hoping to capitalize on some of the good deals offered, we hope you will also keep your local merchants in mind when planning how to spend your hard-earned money during the Christmas shopping season.

Our local merchants are there throughout the year donating to local projects and charities and supporting our schools and local youth sports teams. They also pay local taxes to fund our government services and most importantly they provide local jobs. These retailers are the reason Saturday, Nov. 24 has been designated as Small Business Saturday, a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, to encourage holiday shoppers to patronize businesses that are small and local.

It may be easier to turn on the computer and get out the credit card to shop online during Cyber Monday, but if you can find what you want locally, we'll all benefit more by spending our money here.
