Leetonia board eyes shop as weight room

November 16, 2012
Morning Journal News

LEETONIA- The school board may be looking to empty out the old shop and turn it into a weight room for the athletic department.

Schools Superintendent Rob Mehno Thursday night told the board that school administrators are working with the Leetonia Little Bears organization to put up a pole building next to the shop so that the weight room can be moved into the school. Mehno said the shop is currently being used for storage and that once the equipment is sold, materials being stored in the space can be moved to the proposed pole building.

Shop classes were discontinued approximately five years ago, according to school administrators in attendance.

The weight room is currently located at the stadium behind the school and the facility will be made into a public restroom, Mehno said. The school currently pays $1,000 per year for portable toilets, plus utility costs to operate the weight room, according to John McIlduff, assistant athletic director.

Mehno said that no money will be used from the general fund, only the permanent improvement fund, and that the Little Bears organization will help raise funds for the estimated $50,000 project. Board members noted that the cost is only about one third of the money the school received for its natural gas lease agreement.

The project is still being developed and Mehno said he hopes to have a proposal ready by the next board meeting.

In other business, the board approved athletic supplemental contracts for the 2013-2014 school year for Dave Adams, cross country; Ryan Dowling, soccer; Jim DeJane, varsity golf; Ron Voitus, varsity volleyball; and Michelle Novotny and Dianna Richardson, junior high track.

The board also accepted the resignation of Adams as the assistant track coach for the 2012-2013 school year; approved Todd Rhoads as a volunteer for seventh-grade girls basketball coach; and hired Gretchen Hull as a home instruction tutor on an as needed basis.

Additionally the board accepted $815 in donations to the Ed Smith Scholarship and $50 to the Perkins/Totora Scholarship.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 20 in Room 20 of the K-12 campus.
