ST. CLAIRSVILLE The Wildcats broke the Potters' hearts.

Edison senior standout Kylie Long scored a goal with 10:23 remaining in overtime to lift the Edison girls' soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over East Liverpool Wednesday night in an Ohio Division II Eastern District Sectional Semifinal played down at Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville.

With the win, the Wildcats have advance to the sectional co-final set for 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon back down at Red Devil Stadium. Edison will take on local rival Beaver Local. The Beavers scored two goals in the second half in Wednesday's second semifinal to beat Big Red, 2-0.

Last year, Edison defeated Beaver Local, 1-0, in an Eastern District Co-Final on a golden goal in overtime by Kayla Prokopakis. That game was also played at Red Devil Stadium.

"The last time we played down here, we scored a goal in the first five minutes of overtime," veteran Edison head coach Jeremy Angelo said. "Tonight, we did the same thing. Last year, we scored to advance to the district final. This year, we scored to move to a sectional final.

"Our girls kept playing. They kept fighting. They didn't give up.

"We had some opportunities. We missed them, but we kept playing."

With the loss, the Potters drop to 8-10 to end the season.

"It's always tough to lose a sectional game, but it is even worse when you lose in overtime," first-year East Liverpool head coach Katie Smith said. "I am really proud of the girls. They have improved so much over the previous few seasons.

"This year is just a stepping stone to where I want to take the program. The program is moving in the right direction.

"It is going to be hard to lose these seniors, but we have got a good group of underclassmen ready to step up.

"I am proud of the effort they put forth tonight. We played more than 80 minutes with only two subs."

Both teams had opportunities in each of the two halves, but neither team was able to capitalize on their chances. The Wildcats had two shots inside the box in the final 3:25 of the first half, but they were unable to get one into the back of the net.

Bethanie Bube had multiple chances to score throughout the game for the Wildcats, but East Liverpool goalie Chelsea Possage made some key saves on her as well as the rest of the Edison players to keep the game scoreless.

Possage finished the game with eight saves.

East Liverpool also had some good chances to score in the game, but Edison goalie Jen Sheets and the Wildcats' defense was up to the challenge.

"Both teams had possession, and both teams had chances to score," Angelo said. "It was a back and forth game. Neither team did anything stupid. Neither team did anything dumb."

Sheets finished the game with seven saves.

Meghan Brooks assisted on Long's goal.
