STEUEBENVILLE - The Potters were unable to defend their title.

The East Liverpool volleyball team advanced to the OVAC Class 4A Tournament Final for the second-straight season. The Potters claimed the tournament title last year by defeating the Colts in the title tilt, but this time around East Liverpool came up short in the championship game to Meadowbrook.

The Colts defeated the Potters, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19, to win the title Saturday down at the Crimson Center at Steubenville High School.

East Liverpool advanced to the championship game by defeating Union Local, 25-15, 25-23, at the Joseph Stern Gymnasium.

With Saturday's split, the Potters conclude the regular season with a record of 13-9.

"We had too many unforced errors," veteran East Liverpool head coach Bob Shansky said. "They played a great first game. We had 12 unforced errors in Game 1.

"We played very-good in Game 2. The girls were talking and having a good time.

"In the third game, we were down, but we fought back. We missed seven serves in the game. That is giving them 14 points. We missed five serves against Union Local.

"We have to serve better. You can't have unforced errors. You can't do those things at this time of the year."

The Colts won the title despite being the No. 4 seed in the tournament. East Liverpool was seeded second. Oak Glen entered the tournament as the top seed. Union Local was seeded third.

Against the Colts, Jordan Chupa contributed seven points and two kills, Jordyn Adkins delivered five points and 17 assists and Taylar Jordan recorded 13 kills and eight assists.

Also, Morgan Campbell tallied 12 kills.

"I'm really proud of the girls," Shansky said. "It was an uphill battle all year with injuries and sicknesses. The girls deserved to be here. They were close to taking it."

In the victory over the Jets, Adkins ended up with nine assists, Jordan delivered five kills and six assists and Campbell collected five kills and 10 points.

Also, Cathy Rowe contributed four points.

Meadowbrook advanced to the tournament final by knocking off Oak Glen in the semifinals. The Colts defeated the Golden Bears in two games, 30-28, 25-15.

In the first game, both teams had chances to put the game away, but neither team was able to capitalize on their game points. Eventually, Meadowbrook was able to make a couple of plays down the stretch to pull out the hard-fought victory.

The Colts played a strong second game to knock off the Golden Bears and to advance to the finals against the Potters.

Oak Glen defeated Union Local in two games, 25-11, 25-16, in the consolation final.

Last year, East Liverpool, the No. 1 seed, defeated fourth-seed St. Clairsville, 25-15, 25-11, in the semifinals to move on to the championship game against Meadowbrook. The third-seeded Colts defeated No. 2 seeded Golden Bears, 25-17, 25-11.

In the championship game, East Liverpool defeated Meadowbrook, 25-19, 25-22, to claim the championship. Oak Glen defeated St. Clairsville, 25-17, 25-19, in the consolation final.

East Liverpool's next match is at 7:30 p.m. Monday night in an Ohio Division II Eastern District Sectional Quarterfinal against Meadowbrook down at St. Clairsville. Steubenville will play Jefferson County rival Buckeye Local in Monday's first quarterfinal. That game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

The winner of the East Liverpool-Meadowbrook game will advance to take on Edison in the semifinals at 7 p.m.

Edison played both East Liverpool and Meadowbrook during the regular season. The Wildcats topped the Potters in five at home, while the Colts got the better of the Wildcats in a match played on a Saturday afternoon in Byesville.

The Wildcats won the OVAC Class 5A title Saturday afternoon.

"We have to get ready for Monday," Shansky said.
