Mustangs rout Beavers, 54-6

CALCUTTA -The Mustangs ran away from the Beavers.

The Claymont football team jumped out to a 26-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game, and the Mustangs never looked back en route to a 54-6 win over Beaver Local Friday night at Fighting Beaver Stadium.

With the win, Claymont moves back to .500 on the season at 4-4. The win snapped the Mustangs' two-game losing streak.

The loss drops Beaver Local to 2-6.

First-year Beaver Local head coach Jeremy McElroy was not immediately available for comment after the game.

The Mustangs controlled the game from the very beginning, and Claymont scored touchdowns in all three phases of the game.

Claymont was led by senior Tyler Peterson.

Peterson rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and he also threw for 106 yards and another score.

Also for the Mustangs, Keaton Herron recorded 20 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, and Jonathan Grey contributed 57 yards.

Hunter Striker hauled in one reception for 75 yards, and Taylor Wise caught one pass for 31 yards and a score.

Blake Albaugh also had a big day for the Mustangs. Albaugh returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown, and he returned an interception 54 yards for another score.

The Mustangs played well defensively throughout the game. Claymont forced five turnovers in the game. The Mustangs intercepted four passes and recovered one fumble.

Claymont took a 40-0 lead in the second quarter before Beaver Local finally got on the scoreboard with under 30 seconds left to play in the first half.

Dan Lattanzio tallied 134 yards and a touchdown on the ground to lead the way for the Beavers. Phillip Beohm contributed 61 yards.

The Mustangs scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters.

Claymont opened the scoring on its first drive of the game. Herron opened the scoring with a 5-yard run. The 2-point conversion pass failed making the score 6-0 with 11:19 left to play in the first quarter.

Claymont's second quarter of the game came following the Mustangs' first interception of the game. Peterson capped the drive with a 43-yard scoring scamper. The 2-point conversion run failed, and the visitors led 12-0 with 8:26 showing on the clock.

An interception ended the Beavers next drive. On a second down play from midfield, Beaver Local quarterback Austin Brooks rolled out and fired a pass down the field, but Albaugh stepped in front of the intended target and ran 54 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Earl Scranton's extra point put the Mustangs up 19-0 with 5:23 still left to play in the quarter.

Beaver Local was forced to punt on its next drive. Albaugh fielded the punt, and he weaved his way through the Beavers en route to a touchdown. Alan Ruffini converted the PAT, and Claymont led 26-0 with 3:10 still showing on the clock.

The Mustangs tacked on two more touchdowns in the second quarter.

First, Peterson scored on a 5-yard run, and Scranton's conversion kick put Claymont up 33-0 with 9:23 left to play in the first half. The touchdown was set by the 75-yard hook up between Peterson and Striker.

Later in the stanza, Wise hauled in his 31-yard scoring reception to make the score 39-0. Scranton's extra point split the uprights, and the Mustangs led 40-0 with 3:43 left in the stanza.

The Beavers got on the scoreboard when Lattanzio ran the ball into the end zone from the 3 on a fourth down play. The extra point sailed side, and Claymont led 40-6 with 20.6 seconds left in the first half.

In the third quarter, Heaton scored his second touchdown of the game to increase the Mustangs' lead to 47-6 following Scranton's kick. Heaton score covered 2 yards, and the visitors extended their lead with 4:09 remaining in the quarter.

Claymont's final score came late in the fourth quarter. Grey ran in from the 2, and Scranton's kick made the score 54-6 with 3:38 remaining to be played in the game.

Both teams are scheduled to return to the field Friday night. Beaver Local is scheduled to play at 7 p.m. at Hubbard, while Claymont plays at 7:30 p.m. at home against Meadowbrook.
