SALEM - City police are following up on leads regarding an early morning break-in and burglary at Downtown Gems & Jewels on East State Street Tuesday.
Detective Dave Talbert said witnesses described the suspect as a tall male with a thin build wearing a ski mask, hooded jacket and blue jeans, with the hood pulled over his head. According to the witnesses, they heard glass breaking and saw him exiting the store carrying two bags and some type of instrument or object in his hand.
He then entered a tan-colored sedan and fled east on East State Street at a high rate of speed. Witnesses only accounted for one person, noting the suspect was driving the vehicle.

Someone smashed out the door to Downtown Gems & Jewels at 1136B E. State St., Salem, early Tuesday and apparently got away with some store merchandise.
Talbert said one of the witnesses actually approached him but didn't get close because they thought he might have a weapon besides what he had in his hand. Officers pursued the vehicle east but lost it in the area of Park Avenue.
Police initially received a call at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday from someone across the street at Circle K East in the 1100 block of East State Street reporting a breaking and entering in progress.
Officers arrived and found the front door window smashed out and display cases damaged. The keyholder for the business responded and reported items missing.
Talbert wouldn't go into detail about what was taken, but said it was store merchandise. He said police had also responded for an activated alarm.
