EAST PALESTINE - A newly acquired K-9 at the village police department is already proving her worth with the recent recovery of some narcotics and a woman wanted on a felony warrant.

Toney, the female German Shepherd handled by Sgt. Don Johnson, was officially put into service on Sept. 18 after seven weeks of training in North Carolina. The police dog was purchased with donations from the community.

Johnson said in a report to police Chief Kevin Dickey that Toney was responsible for the apprehension of Lisa Andrews on Sept. 29.

Andrews had an outstanding warrant through Mahoning County and was found after Terry Michalak told police at 11:32 p.m. he had a fugitive at his North Liberty Street home.

According to the police report, Michalak was standing outside of the home when police arrived. He told them that he and his live-in girlfriend, Lisa Andrews, had been fighting and she left out the back door, through the yard and into the woods.

Upon being told by Michalak that Andrews was wanted on a warrant, police called upon Toney to track her through the back yard and into the wooded area where she was hiding.

Johnson said Toney found the woman immediately.

Dickey said that in only a short matter of time Toney is proving her worth to the department.

"In less than two weeks she has already found small amounts of narcotics in cars and (then) this felony warrant. We are certainly putting her to good use. We've really hit the ground running," he said.

Plans are in the works for a public K-9 demonstration, although a specific date has not been set. Dickey said he would like for Toney to have more time working with Johnson before introducing her to the public.
