NEW WATERFORD - One written letter of interest to fill the vacant village council seat has been received, Mayor Shane Patrone said Wednesday.

At the Sept. 11 meeting, the village accepted Councilwoman Chris Bodnar's resignation which was effective on Oct. 1. Her unexpired four-year term concludes on Dec. 31, 2013.

Bodnar served on council for six years and nine months.

Council has 30 days to elect her replacement before the appointment falls to Patrone, according to solicitor Tad Herold.

Patrone said anyone interested needed to submit a letter of interest to Fiscal Officer Dave Slagle or the village by Monday, Oct. 8 at 3760 Village Park Drive, P.O. Box 287, New Waterford, Ohio, 44445.

Applicants can drop off resumes or letters in the water and sewer drop-box in the front of the community building or bring it in during office hours.

"One person sent a letter, a business owner in East Palestine," Patrone said, adding the person had expressed interest during a previous council opening.

Whoever fills the seat will face election in the November 2013 general election.

Council members are paid $50 a month regardless of the number of meetings they attend and can enroll in the state pension plan. There are no health benefits.

Patrone said he has received a number of verbal inquiries on the seat but they need something in writing.

Patrone also noted the village is accepting bids on its used GMC quarter-ton utility pickup through Friday.

The truck has four-wheel drive and Patrone said, "It has been used."
