"I think we made a statement," Beaver Local head coach Liz Connor said. "They are going to be one of the top seeds in our sectional tournament.

"The kids played hard. We were able to sit down and watch some film. We were able to work on our weaknesses. We worked hard during practice.

"I give credit to East Liverpool. They played hard-physical game."

The Potters have now been shutout in back-to-back games. Morgantown blanked East Liverpool, 8-0, Tuesday at Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville in the quarterfinals of the OVAC Cup Girls' Soccer Tournament.

"It's disappointing that after the performance against Morgantown that we didn't come out harder and with more intensity," first-year East Liverpool head coach Katie Smith said.

Becky Stoffer and Alex Eisenhart tallied goals for the Beavers. Stoffer's goal was unassisted. Brittany Mesler assisted on Eisenhart's goal.

Maranda Kiddey made nine saves in goal for Beaver Local.

Chelsea Possage made 10 saves for East Liverpool. Possage has now made 30 saves in the last two games after stopping 20 shots in the Potters' loss to the Mohigans.

Stoffer scored to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead, and Beaver Local maintained a one-goal advantage until late in the contest. With the lead, the Beavers attempted to move the ball in attempt to keep possession of the ball while at the same time enabling precious seconds tick off the clock.

Beaver Local was able to run some time off the clock, and then Eisenhart was able to work her way free before lofting a shot past Possage and into the back of the net giving the Beavers a 2-0 lead with just a few minutes remaining to be played in the game.

The win was a big one for the Beavers.

"We are hoping to gain momentum heading into the postseason," Connor said. "This was the first game in a while where I had butterflies and a nervous feeling going into the game. I had a good feeling going into the game."

After the game, Beaver Local honored its four seniors - Heather Swickard, Melinda Richey, Mercedes May and Mesler.

"They have shown perseverance throughout the year," Connor said. "We knew going into this season that it was going to be a big challenge, and they have been able to step up. They have provided good leadership on and off the field."

Beaver Local's next game is at 5 p.m. Monday at home against Struthers. East Liverpool plays at 5 p.m. Wednesday at United as part of a girls and boys doubleheader.
