Lady Quakers become first girls golf team in Salem school history to reach district play

HUBBARD - Salem is sending its first ever girls golf team to districts.

The Lady Quakers finished fourth out of 12 teams Wednesday at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Hubbard posting a 412 to advance to Division II district play Tuesday at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course in Canton.

"They work really hard," head coach Barb Wollitz said.

"All of the sudden today, even though the conditions were difficult with rain and casual water everywhere, it didn't bother them. Their games just came together at the right moment."

Hannah Rohrabaugh led the way with a 96. Niki Slaven posted 101, Courtney Halter posted 107 and Allison Oshnock and Carli Hochadel shot 108s.

Lakeview won at 356. Hubbard was second at 360 and Poland third at 367.

Western Reserve was seventh at 428, and Columbiana was eighth at 438.

The Lady Quakers will get a feel for Tam O'Shanter during practice rounds later this week.

"We're gonna go over there and get the lay of the land," Wollitz said. "They're really exited. It's our first team to ever get to districts. We've had individuals go, but never as a team. That's a great motivation and maybe it'll help the team in the future."

Wollitz is hopeful for better weather next week, and knows that if her team was able to brave the elements and succeed Wednesday, scores could be even better at districts.

"Conditions were not easy by any means," she said. "On dry land they should do better."

"It's our first trip to districts, and we're just really going to enjoy the day."

That the team's feat came during Ryder Cup week is an added bonus.

"My girls love Rory McIlroy, and they love professional golf," Wollitz said. "I said after today, now I know how (U.S. Ryder Cup captain) Davis Love III feels - on a much smaller scale," she said jokingly.

Salem will tee it up Tuesday in Canton.
