CALCUTTA - The rain brought Senior Night to a halt.

The Beaver Local girls' tennis team squared off against local-rival East Liverpool Tuesday at home on Senior Night.

The two teams were able to complete two matches, and there were two matches being played before the match was called with Beaver Local leading East Liverpool, 2-0.

Beaver Local is 8-9 on the season. The match will be continued at some point next week.

"One more win and we will be .500 for the second year in a row," Beaver Local head coach Jamie Thomas said. "That is very good for the teams that we play."

Both of the completed matches were singles' matches, and both Beavers' victories came in straight sets.

Beaver Local's Jordan Reinke defeated Sutton Stacey, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, and the Beavers' Samantha Bishop defeated Alissa Geisse, 6-1, 6-3.

Players from Beaver Local were leading the other two matches when the match was called.

The Beavers' Jesslyn Taylor was leading Mallory Billingsley in their No. 3. singles match. Taylor won the first set, 6-0. The second set was just getting underway when the match was called.

In doubles, Beaver Local's Kristi Kline and Destiney Stevens were leading Emily Orlo and Courtney Fitch, 4-o, in the first set.

"This was my hope. We are a little farther ahead than I thought we would be," Thomas said. "We hoped we would be here. We would like to get one match and do it over again. We should have won it. If we would have won that match, we would be ever farther ahead. It was in the beginning of the season. Everyone was nervous."

Beaver Local has six seniors on the roster this season. They are Reinke, Bishop, Taylor, Sevens, Katie Carroll and Toree Jackson.

"Jordan, Sam and Jesslyn, all three players have played every varsity match, so they have meant quite a bit to the program," Thomas said. "Jordan normally plays No. 3 singles, and she does very well at that position. Jesslyn and sam both play doubles, and they have made our doubles very strong."

Last year, Beaver Local was led by standout Emily Dawson. Dawson played No. 1 singles for the Beavers.

"Last year was easy," Thomas said. "We had one match won every time. It's been a little harder this year.

"Kristi Kline is playing No. 1 singles, and she is doing a great job. She is a sophomore. She is doing a great job. She has really improved tremendously. We expect the same from her next year and the year after."

The six seniors are the leaders of the team this year.

"Yes, they are," Thomas said. "Maturity wise they are the leaders.

"They are six great girls. I will hate to see them leave."

Beaver Local and East Liverpool are scheduled to open up Ohio Division II Eastern District Sectional play Monday at Dover City Park. Cambridge, Claymont, Dover and West Holmes will also be competing at the sectional tournament.

The sectional draw is scheduled for Sunday.

"I want to see us win a couple of rounds," Thomas said. "It is tough. There are only two spots. "It is really hard without having an Emily. I would like to make it to Tuesday and go from there."
