East Liverpool, East Palestine golfers advance

WEST LAFAYETTE - The East Liverpool golf team captured its fifth tournament win of the season by topping the Division II sectional tournament Monday at River Greens Golf Course.

The Potters shot a 312 for a 10-shot victory. Blake Prince led the Potters with a par 72, while Isaac Davidson, Joey Cilone and Alex Watson all had 80s.

The top six teams and top six individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district tournament in Granville Golf?Club on Oct. 3.

In Salem, third place was good enough for the East Palestine golf team this week.

East Palestine, which placed third in the Inter-Tri County League upper tier tournament Wednesday, placed third at the Division III sectional tournament Monday to earn a district berth.

Three area golfers also earned individual berths as Leetonia senior Luke Janci shot an 18-hole score of 82 at the Salem Golf Club and United junior Bradley Miller and Lisbon freshman Avery Andric had 87s.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district tournament on Oct. 4 at Seven Hills Country Club in Hartville.

Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas, which finished 11th at the state tournament last year, won the sectional team title with 345 strokes.

Lake Center Christian was second with 353 and East Palestine was third with 369.

Leaders for East Palestine were Ryen Kemp with a 90, Alec Dumbauld 91, Drew Wilson 93, D.J. Bandy 95 and Phil Gerner 98.

St. Thomas' Patrik LaLiberte was the medalist with an 81, one stroke ahead of Janci.
