"We played a little better in the second half," first-year Beaver Local head coach Mike Hilliard said.

Matthew Slaven scored to give Poland the early lead in the game, but DeShawn Parker recorded a goal with 23 minutes left to play in the first half to tie the score.

Beaver Local broke the game open in the second half.

Parker and Austin Taylor each recorded a goal and an assist, and Brandon Fetty and Chase Hilliard also tallied goals.

Taylor scored on a penalty kick.

Jon Tomlinson collected an assist.

Logan Andrews came up big in goal for the Beavers throughout the game. Andrews finished the game with 13 saves.

"Our defense kept us in the game in the first half along with Logan Andrews," Coach Hilliard said. "We didn't play very well tonight.

"We told the boys to try and beat them 1-on-1. When they decided to do that, it worked."

After the two goals were scored in the first half, both teams had opportunities to score, but neither team was able to get one into the back of the net. Andrews made a couple of big stops on direct kicks. On one of the shots. Andrews jumped up and was able to get a hand on the shot to knock the ball over the goal to prevent the Bulldogs from regaining the lead.

"In the first half, Brian (Jackson), Preston (Reese) and Brandon on defense kept us in the game, and when Logan had to make a save, he came up big and kept us in the game," Coach Hilliard said.

The Beavers entered the game having lost two out its last three games. Beaver Local lost last Thursday at home to Howland, 4-1, before falling Tuesday at Canfield by a score of 5-4.

"Tuesday's game against Canfield was the best game they have played in a while," Coach Hilliard said. "We came out on the short end of the stick. we lost, but it wasn't because of the kids' effort. A few missed calls and a few mistakes cost us the game."

Beaver Local's next game is at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Austintown Fitch. The Falcons have a pretty good team this season.

"Oh yeah, and we expect a good game from the scores I have heard," Coach Hilliard said. "They are probably one of the better teams we will face this year."
