East Palestine, OH - Robert D. Holzer, Sr., 89, formerly of East Taggart Street, passed away 2:55 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2012, at Essex 1 of Salem where he had been admitted the day before.
Bob was born May 13, 1923, in Alliance, a son of the late Frederick and Ida Vogel Holzer and had been a life-long resident of the community. He was a WWII Veteran of the Army Air Corp. and had worked for the East Fairfield Coal Company, retiring in 1988.
Robert enjoyed woodworking.
His wife, the former Margaret H. Vaccaro, whom he married March 27, 1943, preceded him in death on June 13, 2004. He was also preceded by two brothers, Chuck and Willard Holzer and two sisters, Florence Filippini and Janet Cochran.
He is survived by two sons, Robert D. (Donna) Holzer, Jr. and Anthony (Diana) Holzer, all of East Palestine. Three sisters, Betty Evans, Negley, Patty Wilkins, Friendsville, MD, and Eleanor Hull, Columbiana also survive as do five grandchildren, Jenny Rebecca Holzer, Ryan James Holzer, Timothy Robert Holzer, Kristin Lynn Holzer and Mindy Sue Slaven; and two great grandchildren, Taylor Allen Holzer and Gianna Ellise Slaven.
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 19th, at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, with Robert J. Helbeck of the First Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery with military honors provided by the combined units of the American Legion Post #31 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4579. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 6:00 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.
