EAST LIVERPOOL - Robert W. Allen, 87, of Calcutta, died Sunday evening, September 2, 2012, at the East Liverpool City Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in East Liverpool, September 28, 1924, and raised in LaCroft, he was a son of the late David E. and Sabina Moore Allen and next to the youngest of nine children. A lifetime area resident, he was a devout Christian of the Nazarene denomination where he was a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, church board member, choir member, a member of the Emmanuel Quartet, church bus and van driver, Vacation Bible School volunteer and coached the church youth basketball team.
A hard worker, he always provided for his family and worked many jobs, sometimes two or three at a time. He began working as a caddie at the age of 15 following his father's death to support his mother. He later worked at the 5 and 10 Department Store, delivered groceries for Davis Groceries, stocked grocery shelves, painted barges at Treadwell Industry, gas station attendant, drove delivery truck for Betsy Ross Bakery, an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance, a custodian and night watchman at the International Brotherhood of Pottery and Allied Workers Union building and worked at Sanford and Son Plumbing Supply Store.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris M. Allen, on August 2, 2005. The couple married April 1, 1944. He was also preceded in death by 6 sisters, Edna Marshall, Hazel Silverthorn, Mary Kapp, Mabel Wagner, Opal Yeckel and Evelyn Six and 2 brothers, Carl Allen and Thurman M. Allen.
A daughter, Judy A. Smurthwaite, and her husband, Robert, of Columbiana, and a son, James R. Allen of East Liverpool, survive, along with two grandsons, Trevor J. Allen of New York City and Justin D. Allen of East Liverpool. In addition, there are numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit Thursday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Rev. Dennis Yingling will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
