NEW MANCHESTER - The Golden Bears came up one match short.

The Musselman volleyball team defeated Oak Glen, 25-17, 25-14, to finish first at the 2012 VFW Invitational held Saturday at Oak Glen High School.

Oak Glen defeated Wheeling Park (25-20, 25-10), Frankfort (25-7, 25-23) and Morgantown (25-11, 25-22) in Pool 1 play.

Then in the semifinals, Oak Glen once again defeated Frankfort. This time the Golden Bears won 25-17, 25-11.

Against Musselman in the finals, Vanessa Hissam scored seven points to go along with 10 spikes, four kills, three blocks and two digs, Morgan Poling produced two points, one spike, one kill, two blocks and one dig and Lacee Porter recorded one point, nine spikes, five kills, two blocks and one dig to lead the way.

In the semifinals against Frankfort, Sydney Kell tallied 11 points, three aces, 23 sets, eight assists and one spike, Porter produced three points, two aces, eight spikes, six kills and one dig and Poling collected five spikes, four kills, six blocks and three digs to lead the way. Also, Carissa Williams scored eight points to go along with one ace, 15 sets and seven assists.

Against Morgantown, Kell collected 13 points, four aces, 26 sets, six assists, two spikes and two digs, Poling tallied five points, nine spikes, four kills, three blocks and seven digs and Hissam finished with five points, six spikes, three kills and two digs. Also, Porter delivered three points, 12 spikes, seven kills and two digs.

In pool play against Frankfort, Kell contributed six points, three aces, 24 sets, nine assists, three spikes and one dig, Abby Tice tallied 11 points, three spikes, one kill and seven digs and Williams tallied three points, 19 sets, six assists and one dig. Also, Jessica Hutton ended up with two spikes, one kill, one block and one dig.

Against Wheeling Park in the pool play opener, Poling contributed nine points, 10 spikes, five kills, three blocks and four digs, Kell delivered eight points, 31 sets, seven assists and three spikes and Hissam added nine spikes, four kills, one block and four digs. Also, Williams collected one point, 26 sets, seven assists and one dig.

In other pool play action, Morgantown defeated Frankfort (25-17, 25-13), Wheeling Park (25-20, 25-14) and Weir (25-13, 21-25, 25-18). Also, Musselman defeated Brooke (25-7, 25-13), Parkersburg South (25-7, 25-18) and Weir (25-4, 25-15). Next, Parkersburg South defeated Weir (26-24, 25-13) and Brooke (25-13, 25-21) and Brooke defeated Weir (25-18, 23-25, 25-20). Finally, Frankfort defeated Parkersburg South (29-27, 11-25, 25-19).

Musselman defeated Morgantown (25-13, 25-19) in the other semifinal.

Oak Glen's next match is Wednesday at Catholic Central.
