Requests for drilling permits slow down

August 26, 2012
Morning Journal News

LISBON -The number of drilling permits in Columbiana County has slowed considerably in the past month, with only two new applications filed or approved during that period.

The most recent new permits are both in Hanover Township:

-Batzli unit, accessible from Speidel Road. Chesapeake Exploration is the applicant, and state approval is pending.

-Mountz unit, accessible from state Route 9. Hilcorp Energy is the applicant, and the permit was approved.

This brings to 42 the number of drilling locations in the county permitted since mid 2010. There are a total of 48 well permits issued because more than one well can be located per site.

Of those wells, two are in production - Sanor Farms site off Georgetown Road in Knox Township and one of the wells at Ayrview Acres off U.S. Route 30 in West Township, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website.

The following is a list of the permitted sites by township: Butler, 5; Center, 2; Elkrun, 5; Fairfield, 2; Franklin, 2; Hanover, 9; Knox, 4; Madison, 2; Middleton, 4; Salem, 1; Unity, 2; Washington, 2; and West, 2.
