A 2000 Ford Explorer was destroyed Tuesday morning after catching fire on state Route 558 near the intersection of state Route 517 near East Fairfield. Daniel Ree, 49, of East Palestine told patrol trooper Ron Kelvington the car overheated so he pulled over. After it cooled a bit, Ree said, he added water to the radiator, but the engine caught fire when he started the car. The heat from the fire not only gutted the Explorer but also melted a mailbox and paper box and destroyed some mail. That caused trooper Kelvington some extra work. As he looked through the mail to see who he should contact, three different names were on envelopes for that address. New Waterford firefighters extinguished the fire.
