The Marcellus and Utica Shale drilling boom has taken our area by storm. And, although we believe this will be a great boost to our local economy, we don't believe that drilling should be allowed everywhere.
That's why we're glad that many of our local governmental boards and other groups are taking a stand against drilling in Beaver Creek State Park.
Columbiana County Commissioners and the township association representing the county's 18 townships recently adopted a resolution to protect the park against drilling and logging.
"We are not anti-logging. We are not anti-drilling," St. Clair Township Trustee Bob Swickard said. "There is a place for it though, and this isn't it."
We agree. Beaver Creek State Park is Columbiana County's greatest natural treasure and everything should be done to preserve its beauty for future generations.
Drilling would change the natural character of the park and logging would destroy the habitat of many birds and wildlife. The park must remain untouched.
