WEST POINT - Advised by county officials to prioritize the properties on the demolition program list, Madison Township trustees settled the matter the old fashioned way. They flipped a coin.
Trustee Gary Williams said Tuesday they needed to let county officials know by Wednesday of their priority for demolition of four properties submitted for demolition.
Williams said he was told demolition of all four properties would likely be funded, but county officials are recommending village and township officials prioritize the properties on their submitted demolition lists just in case money runs out.
"How do you put one in front of the other when they're all bad?" Williams asked.
Trustees at first discussed the option of listing the properties on sheets of paper and then drawing them out of a hat. They decided a property in West Point is the lowest priority and one on Cream Ridge Road is first priority.
They then flipped a coin to determine the order of the other two. Second is a property on Y&O Road, with an East Liverpool Road property third.
In other business, trustees discussed a request for information from a resident who wants to start a day care in the township. They said the township is not zoned, so trustees have no say in the matter. They said the resident needs to seek approval from the county's Job and Family Services office.
A McCormick Run Road resident complained to trustees about the condition of the end of his driveway since the road crew dug a ditch on his side of the road. He said he has never had any problems in the 10 years he has lived in the house.
Now the end of the driveway keeps washing away because of the water flow from the newly-dug ditch. He told trustees he wants the problem fixed before he has even more problems with the freezes and thaws of winter.
Trustees said he needs to dig out the end of his driveway and install a culvert pipe. The resident was not happy with the situation nor that he would have to pay for the materials, because the problem is the result of the township digging a ditch.
The common practice, trustees said, is for the property owner to purchase the materials and the township employees will install the culvert pipe. Fiscal Officer Tiffany Chetock estimated the cost of the pipe and gravel at about $200.
"You do a pipe when you have a ditch," Williams said. "You never had a ditch before."
The property owner agreed to pay for the materials and asked the trustees to give him some time to get the money together. He then apologized for being upset at the meeting.
"We're glad you came and talked to us about it," Williams said.
