LISBON Gladys M. Roberts, 85, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter on State Route 7 in Lisbon, at 10:59 p.m. Friday, August 10, 2012, following an illness of a year and a half.
She was born in East Liverpool on March 16, 1927, the daughter of the late Samuel and Dora Pippin Crawford. After attending East Liverpool City Schools, Gladys began to work at the Sohio service station in downtown East Liverpool during World War II as part of the war effort. It was there she met her future husband, William C. "Bill" Roberts, whom she married on July 19, 1947.
Gladys and Bill owned and operated Roberts' Sunoco in the Substation area of the city for many years. When they weren't working together, they travelled together in later years, they enjoyed taking trips in their motor home before her husband's illness, and they also loved the home they shared at Guilford Lake, where Gladys resided until becoming ill. In addition to managing the service station, Gladys also waitressed at Hoge's Restaurant for over thirty years and was a familiar figure to the many loyal customers whom she served.
A Presbyterian by faith, Gladys appreciated the outdoors and loved gardening, hard work and keeping busy.
Surviving her is her daughter, Diana "Sis" White and her husband, Mike, of Lisbon, along with her son, Larry Roberts and his wife, Sue, of Salem. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren and their families: Kelly Waters and her husband, Jeff, and their children Katie and Courtney; Connie Pezzano and her husband, Mark, and their children Kenadee and Karlee; Larry Roberts, Jr., and his wife, Jodi, and their children Ashton and Madison; Jamie Thomas and her husband, Justin, and their son, Jackson; and Mike White. Gladys was also anxiously anticipating the impending birth of another great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, who passed away on November 6, 1994, Gladys was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert S. Crawford.
