Middle ground

Editor:

Again this morning was the story of New York school bus monitor Karen Klein. The video is heart wrenching, but I have questions and so should the school district.

The driver of a school bus is responsible for what happens inside the bus along with getting the children to and from school safely. If a district is lucky enough to have school bus monitors on their buses, then their job is to help aid the driver with control and supervision of the children.

This monitor was not a volunteer, but was getting paid $15,000 a year to be a bus monitor, this was her job. She was being paid more than most drivers make around here.

The responsibilities of a bus driver are tremendous. The driver should have pulled the bus over in a safe location and dealt with the problem. If he/she was unable to resolve it, he/she should have called school administration from the bus and waited for them. The other option is to call the police and wait for their assistance.

These were middle school students who needed to be supervised by the driver and/or the bus monitor. The parents weren't the only ones that didn't do their job.
