June 22, 2012
Morning Journal News

SALEM - Rev. Jack Edward Austin, 70, of Salem passed away peacefully at Hospice House on Thursday, June 21, 2012. He was born on March 26, 1941 in Herrick, Ill., to Charles Edward and Roselynn (Sarver) Austin, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Karen (Gross) Austin of Salem, whom he married on April 19, 1974; his three sons, Jason (Kendell) Austin of Salem, Todd (Emily) Austin of Boulder City, Nev., and Seth Austin of Fort Worth, Tx.; and his three grandchildren, Macey, Jason and Sydney. He is also survived by a sister, Linda (Gary) Baumgartner of Braidwood, Ill.

He attended Lincoln Christian University in Lincoln, Ill., and entered the ministry shortly thereafter. He served as pastor in Lexington, Ky., Crawfordsville, Ind., and in Salem. He loved, cared for and shared Christ's love with countless people during his career, most notably during his nearly three decades at First Christian in Salem. He served there as youth pastor from 1967-1978 and as senior pastor from 1987-2006. He was a past board member and past president of AID, member and past president of the Salem Ministerial Association, a board member of the Memorial Building in Salem and was instrumental in the creation of the Banquet in Salem. After retirement he was employed by Stark Memorial Funeral Home and was a member of Pine Lake Christian Church in Sebring.

Jack began everyday with a crossword puzzle and a cup of coffee. He was an expert in presidential history and had visited every U.S. president's gravesite. He loved to bake and to see the happiness that his cakes, cookies and pies brought to people. He loved to laugh, to joke and to tell stories. His humor, his crooked smile and the twinkle that came to his eyes while telling a joke will be missed by so many.

Friends may call Sunday, June 24 from 2-6 p.m. at First Christian Church in Salem. Services will be held on Monday, June 25 at 2 p.m. with calling hours one hour prior, also at First Christian.

Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Salem First Christian Church Memorial Fund, 1151 East Sixth Street, Salem, Ohio 44460, or to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, Ohio 44514.

Arrangements were handled by Stark Memorial Funeral Home. This obituary may be viewed online at www.starkmemorial.com.
