SALEM - City police are investigating the third armed robbery in nine months at the Circle K on East State Street after a man brandished a knife late Sunday and demanded money.
Detective Dave Talbert said the suspect was described as a white male, 5 foot 9 inches to 5 foot 11 inches tall with a thin build and a light-colored goatee. The weapon was described as a folding pocket knife with a 3 1/2-inch blade.
The man entered the store at 11:28 p.m. and approached the male cashier while wearing a tobaggon hat with eye holes pulled over his face. He did not go behind the counter. Besides the clerk, one customer was in the rear of the store near the coolers.
The man fled east on foot after taking an undisclosed amount of cash. Talbert said they secured the surveillance footage and recovered some evidence, although he wouldn't go into detail.
"We have a very strong lead in this case," he said.
Anyone with information about the incident should call police at 330-337-7811. He noted this was the third time in recent months that the store known as Circle K East had been robbed on a weekend, each time by a perpetrator armed with a knife and some type of cover on the face.
The two previous incidents, on Oct. 22 and on March 25, both resulted in arrests with court cases pending against Travis Weese for the March incident and Cliff Lake for the October incident.
