SALEM - The Salem Arby's Cruise has been invited to do a pregame car show for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers versus the Jamestown Jammers game on July 22.
Arby's Cruise organizer Gene Johnson said he was contacted by the Scrappers, a Class A short season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, over a week ago.
"We're all pretty shocked and excited about it, it came out of the blue," Johnson said. "We're looking forward to it, it'll be fun ... we must be doing something right."
The show, called the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Inaugural Car Show, will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Game time is 5:05 p.m.
The regular Arby's Cruise program with a 50/50 drawing and door prizes will be used, Johnson said.
The event will have participant-judged trophies with other trophies judged and awarded by the Scrappers and the Arby's Cruise staff.
The awards will be made at 3:30 p.m.
Proceeds from the weekly Arby's Cruises usually goes to the Salem Community Food Pantry, but Johnson said, "All proceeds will be going to Second Harvest Food Bank, with a percentage amount earmarked for the Salem Community Pantry. This should help us push to 100,00 pounds of food this year."
Arby's Cruise organizers set a goal of raising 70,000 pounds for 2012 after surpassing last year's goal by 7,000 lbs.
At 4 p.m., the top 10 (or possibly15) winners will be brought into the field for the pregame show.
Pregame festivities include a show featuring the "The Marvelous Wonderettes," a four-member group from West Branch High School that will perform a 1950s show in the stadium.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers play at Eastwood Field in Niles in the New York-Penn League.
