Alice Fitch

SALEM - Alice Fitch, of 999 Jennings Avenue, Salem, Ohio passed to Glory on May 1, 2012, at the age of ninety-seven. She was born Mary Alice Heisman on July 7, 1914, the daughter of George Edward Heisman and Lula Mary (Wachtel) Heisman, of Gettysburg, Ohio.

She grew up during the Great Depression and worked her way through Miami University (of Ohio) from which she graduated in 1935 with a degree in education. She taught school for several years. She worked as a housewife and fully supported her husband's law practice and civic leadership.

She married Attorney Alfred LeVan Fitch at Gettysburg, Ohio, October 8, 1939, after meeting him in the Miami University symphony where both were members. She and Al relocated to Salem. They are survived by four children: Rev. John E. Fitch (Krista Hovis) of Loudonville, Ohio, Sarah Fitch Robinson (Atty. Ian Robinson) of Salem, Dr. Frank Fitch, Ph.D. (Karen Kauffman) of Oxford, Ohio, and Al Fitch (Jean Mitchell) of Salem.

She has seventeen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren, including the following: Through her son John James Fitch (father of Brandon Fitch), Col. Thomas Fitch, US Air Force, (father of Madeline and Meredith), Christina Fitch, M.LS, Sarah C. Fitch, Rachael Stoner,(mother of Isaac, Lydia, Josiah, and Ethan), Sgt. Jesse Braswell, and Peter Braswell.

Through her daughter, Sarah Danton Fitch, CPA (father of Cassaundra (Cassi), Michael, and Joshua Fitch), Dr. David Fitch, D.O., (father of David R. and Nathan Fitch), Atty. Whitman Robinson (father of Leia Robinson).

Through her son, Frank Amy Schulze (mother of Elizabeth, Erica, and Charles J. Schulze), Leah Fitch, and Laura Fitch.

Through her son Al Mrkanda Fitch (father of Madhuri, Vrini, and Krishna Prema), Jahnavi Kopecky (mother of Abhi, Nitai, and Murli), Radha Fitch, and Krsnaa Fitch.

Alice was active in the Salem community, local charities, and clubs. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salem for more than seventy years, a member of its Women's Circle, Haviland Choir, a contributor of music with her flute playing, a Sunday School teacher, and helped with the Youth Club program. She was a long-time member of the local chapter of Church Women United, the League of Women Voters, A.I.D., and Berlin Yacht Club.

Alice's interests included playing her flute and piano, reading, poetry, and bird watching. She and her husband took several cruises with chartered sailboats. She and her friends played music weekly. Alice was the hub or focal point of her extended family. She meticulously kept a book with names and addresses of all the family members and she kept the family united down through the years through her leadership with great hospitality in her historic Salem home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Atty. Alfred L. Fitch, her brothers, Lt. Frank Heisman, US Army Air Corps, of Oxford, Ohio and Frederick Heisman and his daughters Susie and Betty-Mae of Midland, Michigan, her sister, Margaret Brewer of Redlands, California, and her niece, Prof. Rebecca Bobelle of Santa Monica, California.

Friends may show their respects at calling hours Thursday, May 3, from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Arbaugh, Pearce, Greenisen Funeral Home, 1617 East State Street, Salem, Ohio. Additional calling hours will be held on Friday from 3:00 ~ 4:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 436 East Second Street, Salem, Ohio, with funeral services to follow starting at 4:00 p.m. Burial will be at Lisbon Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or MVI Hospice, 2350 East State Street Salem, Ohio.
