LISBON - An East Palestine man who impregnated a 14-year-old girl received 15 months in prison during a sentencing hearing before Judge C. Ashley Pike on Friday.
Juan G. Anchondo, 24, last known address West North Avenue, East Palestine, will be required to register as a Tier I sexual offender over the next 15 years. He will also be on probation for five years.
Before sentencing, Anchondo said he would like to apologize to the girl, although she was not in the courtroom at the time of the hearing. Despite a court order preventing him from seeing the teen, he has been sending her money through one of his family members to care for their child. The child was born last July 16.
"There is no justifying by any means what has happened," Anchondo said. "As a man, I do feel obligated to take care of that (child support). Being in jail, I'm not going to be able to do that. This is not where I want to be at this point in life."
Although Assistant Prosecutor Tim McNicol suggested a 12-month sentence and Anchondo's attorney Kelly Linger asked for the minimum six-month sentence, Pike elected for the longer 15-month prison term.
"I respect the state's recommendation, but you even said you have an extensive criminal past," Pike said to Anchondo, adding the decision for additional time was not based on Anchondo appearing for his hearing 15 minutes late. "Don't waste this time, learn from your mistakes."
Anchondo had pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor for his sexual relationship with the girl, which court documents state occurred starting in August 2010 and lasting until December 2010.
