Lend a hand

I wonder how many of you think that all an old person has to do to go somewhere in Columbiana County is call CARTS.

Boy, are you wrong. Let me tell you a few things. First, I think CARTS is doing all it can to help people. That is the problem: They help anyone who needs a ride, not just the old and the handicapped.

Say you wake up ill and want to go see your doctor who will take you in that day. You call CARTS. "Sorry, we can't take you for four days, we are filled up." But I'm sick now. "Sorry, that is the best we can do and then you may have to wait a couple of hours for us to pick you up." But I can't wait that long. "We're sorry, but we have a lot of people to take care of. We give about 200 rides a day all over Columbiana County."

So what are we supposed to do.

I am 86, crippled and on a walker. I can only stand a short time and need a pillow behind my back when I sit. So I can't wait two or three hours for a bus. Most old people are somewhat like me, so how can we get our groceries, go to the doctor, or do some shopping without help?

We're sorry we can't walk, drive or get around much anymore but we sure try.

I have a daughter, son and sister who help me all they can but they do not live close by and I do like to take care of myself.

I know there are a lot of you out there who have no one to help. So those of you can help the old and disabled, make sure they have a way to get food and go to the doctor or wherever they have to go.
