"Giving back," has become an overused cliche in recent years. But when East Liverpool High School graduate and former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz decides to "give back" it takes on significant meaning.
Recently, Holtz surprised the East Liverpool High School football team by spending an hour with them during practice.
The ELHS coaching staff knew there was a possibility Holtz might stop by, but the players didn't have a clue. And they were mesmerized by the legendary coach, hanging on to his every word, when he showed up with ESPN cameras in tow.
Holtz is such a great motivational speaker, that, even if you weren't a fan of Notre Dame or any of the many other teams he has coached, he can move you to action.
A 1956 East Liverpool High School graduate, Holtz also coached several other NCAA football teams and served as an NFL head coach, as well. He is also an author, motivational speaker and, now, ESPN television commentator.
His "Dr. Lou" segment on ESPN during college football games' halftime, is both humorous and motivational.
These young men on the East Liverpool football team will remember this and be affected by this visit for the rest of their lives, because Holtz gave them the best gift of all - his time.
We won't be surprised if the ELHS Potter football team has an exceptional season this year after this remarkable visit.
