Gratitude and generosity

November 24, 2010
Morning Journal News

Despite the slow local economy there is much to be thankful for in Columbiana County. When counting our blessings we must not forget to include the generous folks who make sure the less fortunate among us are able to have a bountiful holiday meal.

Starting today at 1 p.m. the 16th annual community Thanksgiving dinner will be served at the Columbiana Church of the Nazarene by volunteers from Way Station in Columbiana. Reservations to attend this dinner needed to be made by Nov. 12, but donations and volunteer help are still being accepted.

On Thursday, the Whitestone Ministries along with Berea Christian Church in Leetonia are serving a free meal open to those experiencing a hardship or who are alone. Reservations for this meal closed Nov. 15.

A community Thanksgiving dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Memorial Building. This meal is open to anyone in the area who has no other plans for the holiday. No reservations are required to dine in, but for home delivery or transportation call, 330-337-3728.

And the Points of Light at 1200 Pennsylvania Ave. in East Liverpool will serve its traditional Thanksgiving dinner from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday. After experiencing extensive damage at the hands of vandals earlier this year, the fact that this dinner is still being held is truly something to be thankful for on this holiday.

If you're alone this holiday, why not consider joining one of these community celebrations. And, if you're fortunate enough to be spending the day with family and friends and someone else is doing the cooking, consider helping out at one of these worthwhile endeavors either before or after your private celebration. The help will surely be welcomed, and you'll be glad you lent a hand.
