Police seek man who robbed EP Eagles at knifepoint

By MATTHEW SCHOMER/Staff Writer

EAST PALESTINE - City police are searching for a man who used a knife to steal an undetermined amount of money from the Fraternal Order of Eagles on Wednesday afternoon.

Police Chief Clyde Hoffmeister noted a barmaid who was working alone at the lodge prior to opening it for the day heard a knock on the door and answered it, asking if she could help the man standing outside. The man thrust a knife at her and told her to give him all her money.

The two people then went inside the lodge and the man told the barmaid to unlock the office, but she informed him she did not have the office keys. The man located a moneybag in the bar area and stole it and the money inside.

The barmaid told police the man had assaulted her, and police located a slight abrasion over one of her eyebrows. She called 911 immediately after the man left.

"The whole incident probably lasted a minute or two minutes. Sometimes it's like these people vanish into thin air," Hoffmeister said.

The barmaid described the man as white with a bushy red beard. He had been wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses. She was unable to determine the man's height or weight as Hoffmeister said, "She was pretty shook up."

The matter is under investigation, and Hoffmeister is asking anyone with any information on the incident or the identity of the person who robbed the lodge to contact the police department at 330-426-4344.
