Golden year for Waterford couple

NEW WATERFORD - Don and Susie Cunningham will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 27 with an open house for family and friends from 1-4 p.m. at the East Palestine Community Center. Their children are hosting the event.

The couple was married on Dec. 28, 1959 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in East Liverpool.

Mrs. Cunningham graduated from East Liverpool City Hospital's nursing program in 1959. She worked for several years at St. Elizabeth's South Side and East Liverpool Hospitals. She also worked as a Salem Area Visiting Nurse for 20 years, retiring in 1998 and was involved with "Meals on Wheels" until 2008.

Mr. Cunningham served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960 and was stationed in Germany for 18 months. After his military service, he worked at the local dairy and Crucible Steel until 1966. He retired from General Motors-Lordstown after 30 years of service.

The couple are both members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where Mrs. Cunningham is very active. Mr. Cunningham is also a member of the East Palestine Moose.

They have five children Donald (MaryAnne) Cunningham, Elyria; Mike (Gretchen) Cunningham, Santaquin, Utah; David (Karen) Cunningham, Mukilteo, Wash.; Bridget Rizzo, Columbus, Ga.; and Theresa Cunningham, New Waterford. They also have 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
