Lisbon Chamber prepares for Christmas activities

By TOM GIAMBRONI Staff Writer
POSTED: November 30, 2009

LISBON - Santa Claus is coming to town.

The jolly old elf himself again will be featured in Lisbon's Christmas parade to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday as the Lisbon Area Chamber Commerce prepares for the upcoming holiday season.

At this week's meeting, the Chamber board discussed the final flurry of preparations for hosting the annual Christmas parade and other events, which include the Breakfast with Santa event from 8-11 a.m. at the Lisbon Eagles Club. The breakfast is sponsored by Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services employees and their Relay for Life team.

The Lisbon and Beaver Local high school bands are scheduled to participate in the parade, along with other units and parade floats.

Following the parade, local photographer Jerry Tyson will be available to take photographs at the downtown gazebo from noon to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. For $12, participants will receive seven portrait photographs of different sizes.

Village workers have been busy decorating the town, as have Chamber members. Stevie Halverstadt reported for the first time the outside of the Columbiana County Courthouse will be decorated, using decorations purchased with $350 in private donations received from county officials.

Village Council also donated money to the Chamber's decoration efforts.

In other action, the Chamber reported it has a balance of $1,948 in its checking account, down about $800 from last month, when Executive Director Marilyn McCullough warned funds had dipped to the lowest point in nearly two years. This was attributed to one-time renovation to the new Chamber building.

Since then, 15 of the 66 Chamber members paid their annual membership dues early and more are coming in every day, which has helped keep the balance from dropping even further.

The Chamber has a certificate of deposit in the bank worth close to $10,000 it could draw on if necessary.

In related news, McCullough announced they canceled the planned frozen-pie sale as a way to raise immediate cash for the Chamber. She said some felt these pies, to be sold at Christmas, would compete with baked goods sold by Chamber members over the holidays.

The Chamber also announced it was making office space on the second floor of its headquarters available for rent. The Chamber office is at 120 N. Market St., and anyone interested in renting the office space should call McCullough at 330-424-1803.
