WELLSVILLE - A fire in a remote campground in the hills above the village Monday afternoon is being called suspicious by fire officials.
Highlandtown fire Chief Tim Roush said last night that at least three camper-type trailers burned in the Oak Tree Campground, located at the far south end of the village.
Volunteers from Highlandtown, Wellsville, Liverpool Township and Irondale fought the blaze which necessitated the use of four-wheel-drive vehicles and grass trucks due to the rough terrain that was impossible to reach with large engines, according to Roush.
Grass units traveled back and forth, shuttling water from engines parked below the hillside where the campers were on fire.
An investigator from Highlandtown was sent to the scene, but Roush had not had time to discuss his findings with him last night, although he said, "It's definitely suspicious."
The fire remains under investigation, with fire officials saying the county sheriff's office will likely be involved. No further details were available last night.
