Almost every day our newspaper carries stories about local residents who volunteer their time for the benefit of others. While people doing great things is nothing new in Columbiana County, we still welcome the chance for everyone to get involved in an organized effort like that which is planned for Saturday.
A national day of volunteering that was organized in 1992 and is sponsored nationally by USA Weekend Magazine, Make A Difference Day is hosted locally by newspapers which carry the magazine. In Columbiana County, that makes the Morning Journal the official local sponsor of the event, and many local groups have made the fourth Saturday in October a day for helping others each year.
Millions have participated in past years, including 3 million in 2008, and several million more are expected to participate in this year's event. Locally, we know of at least two groups which are planning to participate, and hope others will join in the effort as well.
Everyone feels better about themselves when they take time to give back to their community. Make A Difference Day projects may be large or small and needn't even involve money. Giving of yourself and your time can be more rewarding and beneficial than writing a large check for a monetary donation.
