Betty Swarny

DOVER - Betty J. Swarny, 85, a longtime Dover, Ohio resident passed away peacefully in her daughter, Myra's home on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 lovingly surrounded by her family.

Born March 11, 1924 in Gallipolis, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Eustice and Bessie (Halley) Jeffers.

She was a former employee of the U.S. Census Bureau.

Betty was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover and also enjoyed volunteering in the St. Joseph School. She was also a member of TOPS and had many interests including a love for painting. She devoted her life to her children. For many years, she and her late husband, Stephen spent their winters in Wildwood, Florida. Steve died October 28, 1998 following forty seven years of marriage. Betty was also preceded in death by three grandchildren, Jonathan, Christian, and Sarah along with two brothers, Kenneth and James Jeffers and three sisters, Barb Newland, Opal Perkins, and Freda Jeffers.

Betty is survived by seven children Jeffrey (wife, Linda) Swarny of Cleveland, Thea (husband, Jim) Belknap of New Philadelphia, Stephanie Swarny of Canton, Gregory (wife, Lisa) Swarny of Kyle, Texas, Bruce (wife, Meneely) Swarny of Seattle, Washington, Kent (wife, Pam) Swarny of Bolivar, and Myra (husband, Greg) Hyde of East Palestine; ten grandchildren, Cody, Zach, Elizabeth, Rowan, Allison, Noah, Ky, Mike, Garry, and April and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters in law, Violet and Marianna Jeffers along with her canine companion, Dusty.

A Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 5. 2009 at 2 pm in the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover with Fr. Anthony Lonzo officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Dover. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Sunday from 5-8pm.
