COLUMBIANA - Surrounded by family and her beloved caregivers Ruth B. Newell (84) of Columbiana left for her eternal home at 9:50 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, from her house on Park Place. She passed away in peace after an extended battle with Alzheimer's and complications of diabetes.

Ruth was born March 17, 1925, in Manitowoc, Wis., the daughter of the late Ellis and Laura (Bastian) Good.

She was a 1943 graduate of Columbiana High School and had worked as a sales clerk at Sheely's Linen Outlet in North Lima for 10 years.

Ruth Newell loved her family, her work, dancing, playing cards, helping others and was an avid bowler until she was 80 years old thanks to the patient guidance given to her by her teammates those last few years. She was active in several bowling leagues at Arrowhead Lanes throughout her adult life and served as secretary for the morning league during many of those years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbiana.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Richard Newell whom she married on Sept. 10, 1946. She is also survived by her sister, Frances VanPelt of Washingtonville, Ohio; her daughter-in-law, Carol Newell of Anchorage, Alaska, wife of Ruth's oldest son, Clifford Newell who passed away last September; daughter, Patty (Matt) Humlie of Gig Harbor, Wash.; son, Randy (Jayne) Newell of Wasilla, Alaska; six grandchildren, Ryan Newell, Kendra (Todd) Loges, and Lianne Newell, Katie (Travis) Elseth, Sarah Humlie, and Bryan Humlie; and four great-grandchildren, Erynn, Evan and Elyssa Loges and Caiden Newell.

A celebration of her life will be held in Ruth's beloved backyard at 216 Park Place, Columbiana, on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009. The family will receive guests from 2:30-4:30 p.m. with a short memorial service at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be given to Mahoning Valley Hospice Care or the Alzheimer's Association.
