Given the current economic climate in our country, when it came time to pick a theme for the Morning Journal's 2009 Progress Edition, the staff pondered how to find a positive slant during trying times for a special section that usually chronicles the achievements of both business and local communities during the past year.
With the 80th anniversary of the 1929 stock market crash coming in October, we thought now would be a good time to feature our local businesses which had survived the crash and the subsequent Great Depression. We were curious to find out how they had survived, not only the Great Depression, but all of the other economic downturns the United States had endured since then.
So, we decided on the theme -"Time Tested -Secrets to Success in Business," to focus on the local businesses which have enjoyed this enduring longevity, as well as other, newer businesses, which chose to be a part of our special advertising section.
We were amazed at how many of our local businesses have survived at least eight decades and were fascinated by their success stories. We hope you enjoy their success stories, too, as you read our annual Progress Edition, inside today's newspaper.
