Hazel JohnstonJune 26, 2009EAST LIVERPOOL Hazel Marie Johnston, 91, of Glenmoor, died peacefully with her family by her side at 5:55 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Akron City Hospital's Acute Palliative Care Unit following complications of a head injury as a result of a recent fall. Born in Clinton, Pennsylvania, March 8, 1918 a daughter of the late James Patterson and Ada Inglefield Crawford, she lived most of her life in this area. A graduate of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1937, she was also a member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association and attended its Olde Guard luncheon. A member of the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church in East Liverpool, she was the treasurer of the Sunday school class program, active in the E. J. Gaston Class, as well as many other church activities. In addition, she was a past chairman of the East Liverpool Christian Women's Club, and a past president of Church Women United. For many years she was active in Stonecroft Ministries, holding several offices with the organization, including president of the local chapter. She remained active until her accident and regularly participated in the Silver Sneakers program at the Calcutta YMCA. She worked in the office of Arthur A. Turner, DDS as a dental secretary from 1959 to 1975. Later, she worked at the Columbiana County Department of Human Services as a nursing home caseworker from 1975 until her retirement in December of 1981. She was preceded by her husband, Lawrence E. "Pete" Johnston, who died on November 17, 1973. The couple married September 15, 1939. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter J. Crawford. Survivors include three sons, Jack E. Johnston, and his wife Kay, of Macedonia, Ohio, Larry J. Johnston, and his wife Judy, of Madison, Alabama, and Craig A. Johnston, and his wife Diane, of Aurora, Colorado. There are nine grandchildren: Brian D. Johnston, Christopher S. Johnston, Gail R. Riska, Timothy J. Johnston, David C. Johnston, Steven E. Johnston, Megan E. Ryan, Peter A. Johnston and Nathan J. Johnston; as well as eighteen great-grandchildren: Ryan C., Samuel J., Aimee K., and Henry L. Johnston, Sarah C., Andrew M., and Colton T. Riska, Sophia L., Rebecca M., Joshua J., Jonah C., Caleb J., Luke W., Gracie R., Matthew E. and Elizabeth M. Johnston, and Benjamin J. and Olivia M. Ryan. Friends may call Monday at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Mark Dunn officiating. Burial will take place at Columbiana County Memorial Park. Following the service, family and friends will gather at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
