Summer swimming program offered at community center

June 25, 2008
SALEM— Area youth can now register for a summer swimming program at the Salem Community Center Pool Beginning July 1, the eight-week program will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays at the pool, although it is not a Community Center program, according to program coordinator Caroline McDermott. Emphasizing techniques and endurance, the program will teach the youth the basics of the sport, McDermott said, and anyone who can swim the length of the pool without stopping is encouraged to join. A 2001 graduate of Salem High School, McDermott said she started the program so that the area youth could gain exposure to swimming. “I want the kids to have the opportunity to fall in love the sport,” she said. “When I was in high school, there wasn’t a pool in the area. With the facility here, there should be an opportunity for athletes in the area to train closer to home. I want the youth of the area to have the same opportunities and chances for success that I did.” Focusing on life skills, the program will provide the youth with lessons in time management, goal achievement, team work and sportsmanship, qualities and skills that can be utilized beyond the sports world, McDermott said. Since the program will work on the basic swimming skills, such as arm strokes, McDermott said the swimmers will not compete with other programs this summer, but that she hopes to have the kids prepared for the competition in the fall season. In addition to the youth program, she said she also would like to create a team at Salem High School and a masters program for area adults. A record holder and All-Conference swimmer at Baldwin Wallace College, McDermott has been very active with swimming in the past few years, with experience coaching youth, college and adult level programs in Ohio, West Virginia and Georgia. Registration is $40 for the entire eight-week program and will continue throughout the program.
