Gotta love it that the officials of the city of EP all turn out because the police officers do not know basic ADA law. To the individual who stated that the dog was not trained, obviously does not own a dog. If a loyal dog is anywhere near where his master is attacked, the dog will attack. This dog DID NOT ATTACK THE POLICE. If the dog was in the courtroom then obviously it was trained. Why the judge hesistated on waiving the right to a speedy trial is beyond me. He should have just thrown the case out based on ADA law. Let's just have the police harrass citizens and let the drug problem in EP run rampant.

"What angers me is I know Eric, and he is NOT a disabled vet as you are all thinking. "

You better hope you're right. If it was me and I was disabled, I'd be suing your wrinkled ass off.

"What angers me is I know Eric, and he is NOT a disabled vet as you are all thinking."

If he is diagnosed with PTSD he most likely is disabled, as the VA is really pushing those with PTSD to sign off on disability.

Then they take their firearms.

VERY food point, intheknow330. But I'd bet dollars to doughnuts the video was deleted if it proves the veteran's case.

I would like to know the name of the person(s) who made the police aware of Mr. Goempel and his service dog. Seems from hearing and reading from others, someone pointed him out? Let's hear who and why!

The security personnel at the courthouse obviously know the law. The EP police chief and other EP officials obviously do not. There is no right under federal law for local authorities to question the disabled regarding their disability. That's the whole point of the law, to remove from the disabled the burden of continually being questioned about their physical and/or mental condition by persons untrained in dealing with and recognizing disabilities. Those who attack Mr. Goempel demean themselves and display a narrow-minded, unsympathetic ignorance of both the law and his condition. EP police did not have the legal right to question Mr. Goempel's disability. Period. I don't know how many different ways that can be said to make some people understand this.

ou812 & oldcoot: If it was NOT a service dog, then how and why was the dog in the courtroom? Obviously, it was legit. You have to go through security at the court, so answer that. I cannot take my mutt to the building, so?

oldcoot I am so glad you came out and said this - I have been saying this all along - "he isn't who you think". police know that as well as you and I - its a shame there are real vets out there that need this service and most don't get - its a shame a person like this has to fake it to get attention!!

What angers me is I know Eric, and he is NOT a disabled vet as you are all thinking. This is fact. This 'service dog" is not a trained service dog. fact. And what angers me more is that I have a close friend who lost a leg in iraq, who is a legitimate disabled vet, and everyone is treating Goempel as if he was combat disabled. Our men and women who served and lost limbs or are permanently scared are worthy of more than we can ever give them. The sacrifices they have endured and still endure. It angers me that this guy is using the disabled vet tag to fight his charge. Ok...he wants to fight the charge...just fight it...base it on the basis for arrest, dont lump yourself in with people who actually need legitimate service dogs and real disabled vets to argue why you were arrested. Im guessing ...and have pretty good info he wasnt even given an honoraable discharge. Just sayin!

It may be worth the attorney asking if one was present during this mess. Best of luck with your case. Seems cut and dry ADA was violated several times over by EPPD.

When will all parties involved realize that, if reports are accurate, Mrs. Figley is the best witness Goempel has? She is not helping the village or the police with her version of events; she is helping seal their deserved fate. In all the media accounts Mrs. Figley is reported as saying Chief Dickey asked Goempel repeatedly for paperwork showing that his dog was a service dog. This is the one thing under federal law that Chief Dickey was NOT allowed to do. And isn't it interesting that Mr. Goempel is permitted to have his dog with him in a Columbiana County courtroom, but EP police did not want him on a public street during a public event. EP officials are the ones who can end this "circus" by dropping all charges. Why they don't do that, apologize, and negotiate an end to this nasty event is beyond me, and only shows how dumb and insensitive our village officials are. EP residents should be demanding the resignations of every EP official involved in this disgraceful affair

Mr Goempel....Thank you for your service to this country. Apologies for this village mistreating you. They are numbskulls that (I guess) don't know the law or know any better. No excuse. If you go back a week or two in this newspaper...you will see "Big Boss" claims to have video , and another person too. Although Big boss....have doubts on that one. But worth a try with both. Good luck and God Bless. Hang tough, and see this through...the village idiots need to be taught a lesson once and for all.

Cruiser, circus? Of course! The paper did make mention two town clowns were there in support of the Police. Write up in the paper states the Service Dog was allowed in the court room and was properly identified, as it was during the arrest. Interesting.
