Sebring cops teach Bike Safety Night

KNOX TOWNSHIP — About 20 kids were gathered around Sebring Police Officer Danny Guy, sitting Indian-style on the outdoor basketball court at Knox Elementary.
“What’s the most important part of your bike?” Guy asked.
“Brakes?” one boy guessed.
“No,” Guy said, holding up his bicycle helmet. “Right here.”
Guy and fellow Sebring Police Officer Mike Porter were on hand Tuesday evening for Bike Safety Night, part of Right-To-Read week at the three West Branch elementary schools. Guy is part of Sebring’s bicycle patrol, which operates during parades and trick or treat, he said.
May is Bicycle Safety Month, Guy said. He rattled off a list of statistics that show why riders should wear helmets when peddling. About 800 people are killed and 500,000 injured every year in bicycle crashes. Of those half-million injuries and fatalities, 75 percent are head related.
