Charity games are a good idea
You have undoubtedly read the notices in the sports briefs that some of the local schools playing a benefit game-like scrimmage for charity. The game which interests me the most is the United-Salem game scheduled for tonight at Salem High School. The scrimmage will be played just like a game, with the reserves tipping off at 6 p.m. The varsity game will follow. This is similar to what colleges do, only they call them exhibition or preseason games. Each school is required to designate a charity for their share of the proceeds. Salem has chosen for their money to go to local food banks, while United opted to support Relay for Life. Both are good choices. What I like about this type of game is that it gives both teams a chance to play in a front of a crowd with the officials calling infractions like they would in a game. United and Salem are natural rivals, so hopefully there will be big crowd. It would have been nice if more of the area schools would have set up one of these games.
