The annual canoe races sponsored by Vivian’s Antiques and Boy Scout Troop 40 kept the Fourth of July spirit stirred up as women, men and couples tested their paddling skills at the pond in Firestone Park as part of the “Community Celebration.”

I own a championship team and you can too
Mon, June 30, 2008 @ 6:27PM
In April of last year I received an e-mail regarding a proposal by a group wanting to round up 50,000 or more people to purchase an English soccer club. The group, MyFootballClub, promised to run the club as a democracy once member dues were collected and the club was purchased. I thought this was a worthy attempt at an interesting social experiment in collectively running a sports team, so I decided to pledge my support. In November the group came to terms with semi-pro outfit Ebbsfleet United, who is just outside of the league structure of English soccer. Within weeks of the purchase, MyFootballClub’s website was buzzing with debate on how to run the club and voting options were flowing forth. The structure of the voting process for a member resembles that of the popular global video game series “Football Manager” or “Worldwide Soccer Manager” as it is known in the United States. Members are asked to vote on everything from picking the starting lineup to determining if the club s

70s fun...
Fri, June 27, 2008 @ 3:57PM
I had totally forgotten about Peter Pan records...especially the 45s with the yellow press with the smiling sun on it. My sister and I had many of these records, that we'd play over and over again. I remember there being a childrens record section in the toy department at Hills and KMart, and they'd have several of these Peter Pan records. I think the one we played the most was "Pop Goes The Weasel". Other fun things that we grew up with....My cousin Patty's portable 8-track player that we bought at her garage sale. Roller skating in the driveway listening to The Carpenters (that's all the next-door neighbors were allowed to listen to.) Renting videos at National Video in the early 80s was definitely a different experience than today. Actually, with today's technology, I doubt that video rental stores will be around much longer. Giant Eagle is quickly replacing all of their Iggle Video stores with self-serve DVD rental kiosks. Many video store locations have clos

Ninja Gaiden
Mon, June 30, 2008 @ 8:03PM
I recently finished the game “Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword” for the Nintendo DS. I loved it (thank you Lisa). The Ninja Gaiden series is one of the best franchises in video games, and this episode is a great addition. I enjoy playing DS games (and other portable games) more now than ever before. It is much more difficult for me to get into lengthy console games when the kids are constantly getting into trouble. It is nice to have the portable system that can be played for shorter periods of time and be quickly put away. It also helps that the portable games are generally less difficult or in depth. I can complete a game on the DS while only playing for twenty or thirty minutes at a time. Some console games can have hours upon hours of seemingly continuous play to finish the game. I used to have the time and patience for that kind of play; I don’t anymore. That makes shorter games perfect for me. Another great thing about this game is the cinema scenes. The cut scenes are

NASCAR Snippets and Rants
Sun, June 8, 2008 @ 1:15AM
As much as I thought and thought about what the subject of this week's blog would be, I could not settle on one specific idea or incident. There is so much to talk about, and frankly, not enough time to discuss all that could be discussed. So this week's blog will feature snippets of some of the changes that are occurring (or have occurred in the past few weeks) within the NASCAR community: from Kasey Kahne's renewed sense of confidence, to Juan's crew chief problems, to Matt Kenseth's major move up in points, and even a few other things. It seems Kasey Kahne's win in the All-Star race wasn't a fluke at all. Just one week after his win at Lowes Motor Speedway, he won the Coca Cola 600 at the very same track - something Dale Jr. was expected to do at Daytona after his win with the Budweiser 500, and failed to do. Will this newly restored sense of confidence help Kahne in the rest of the races this season? Only time will tell, but for now at least, he has worked his way up into t
