This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Screamingtikicon at the Eastwood Expo Center in Niles. It was a Comic and Pulp Culture Convention. The guest list was surprisingly good, featuring 60's Batman actors including Adam West, Julie Newmar, Yvonne Craig and Lee Meriweather; not to mention actors from Star Wars and Superman. The overall theme was Batman with displays of the 60's Batmobile, Batcycle and Batcopter.
I was very pleased to see a good convention so close to home. The vendors were very pleasant and there was a number of different things to see. Most of the booths were classic toys; however there was a very nice Lego display. There were a couple of nice sword vendors and a very good Transformer booth. I saw lots of comics and comic toys, but there was very little anime.
One of the most unique things I saw was the life size remote controlled R2D2 form the R2 Builders Club. Seeing the kids react to the astromech droids as if they had come right out of the movies was fantastic. The detail they put in their work is nothing less than amazing.
The costume contest, held in the Eastwood Mall was not as large as it should have been considering it is so close to Halloween. There were a number of Batman entries, Spider-man, Hulk and even a Lego Star Wars character. After the contest, the kids were invited to trick or treat at a number of participating mall stores and see some other notable vehicles throughout the mall including: the Mach 5 from Speed Racer and KIT from Knight Rider.
I was very surprised and pleased that such an event was held in our area. Despite the current economic climate, it is possible to go to an event like this to just let go and have a little fun. The planners of this event did a wonderful job. I wish them luck and hope for more such events in the future.
