October 16, 2008 - Ron Flaviano
As I have said before, growing up in the 70's was definitely quite an experience. One of our favorite shows after school was WGBH's "Zoom", which aired on our PBS affiliate Channel 45. My sister and I often had to con our parents into not watching the national news, so that we could watch "Zoom" every day.
"Zoom" of the 70's was a hybrid children's show that was mixed learning with music and fun. The cast of the show would change every so often, but during its initial run "Zoom" introduced many pop culture elements into society. One of them was "Ubbi-Dubbi" talking, where if you were saying "Hi Friends", in Ubbi-Dubbi it would be "Hubbi Frebbends!" Silliness for sure, but it kept pre-teens glued to their sets in the 70's.
WGBH is releasing a "Best of Zoom - The 70's" on October 28th as a 2-DVD set, and believe me, I will be glad to take a trip back in time to revisit the show. From its catchy theme song, to the silly magic tricks and "Zoom-phenomena", "Zoom" is and always will be a fun slice of the 70's!
